Topaz Rings, Gold And Silver Topaz Gemstone Rings

Picture
Topaz is a gemstone that is available in a few colors. However when talking about topaz rings most people refer to blue topaz rings or probably white topaz rings. There was a time when yellow topaz was fairly common, however it is a fairly rare gem stone to find these days. Most topaz rings that you come across would have topaz in different shades of blue. But the fact is that, the most common occurence for this gem stone is white. The gem stone in your gold or 925 silver blue topaz ring, began life as a white topaz. Special processes have been developed to permanently change white topaz to different shades of blue. The radiation process has been mastered by many gem manufacturers. Strict safety standards are practised during this process. Post production involves the 'cooling' period where the gems are retained until all radiation has been released from the stones. If you are worried about the health hazards of such processes, you can rest assured that it is very safe. The process has been used for over 3 to 4 decades and many thousand tonnes of blue topaz has been treated. There has never been a reported and confirmed case of these gems harming anyone. The advantages of the radiation process for treating blue topaz are many. The cost is not very high, this helps keep the price tag at an affordable level. The color change is permanent, you need not worry about color fade and such related issues. The color change is all through the gem stone and not just on the surface. This means that the gem in your topaz ring can be repolished or even recut without fear of losing color, this is a sharp contrast to other treatment processes being followed.

When you choose your topaz gem stone ring, you will need to make a selection of the blue shade that you prefer. At one extreme is the very pale blue topaz also referred to as 'sky blue topaz'. Clever gem dealers sometimes refer to this blue topaz as 'aqua topaz' hoping that buyers will confuse it with the much more expensive, aquamarine gemstone. So while your blue topaz ring could have a gem that closely resembles aquamarine, just remember that it is not aquamarine. The next color shade for blue topaz is the most popular, it is referred to as 'swiss blue topaz' which is a bright crisp blue. At the other end of the blue color is the deep 'london blue topaz', an impressive blue color that almost puts it in the category of a blue sapphire. When it comes to ladies blue topaz rings, we have found that sky blue topaz and swiss blue topaz are favorites. Men who wear topaz rings generally prefer london blue topaz, next would the pale sky blue topaz gem stone.

We talked above regarding the radiation process to treat white topaz gems to shades of blue. Let's continue our discussion on treating topaz gems. In todays gem and jewelry world you can find some exotic colors for topaz, red topaz, mystica topaz, green topaz and even more colors. These gems do not show their natural colors, they are treated white topaz too but, the treatment is different. The process used to treat these gems provides a mere coating on the surface of the gem. Topaz gemstone rings with these gems need to be handled carefully. Any scratch or chip on the gem stone will damage the upper layer which has the color coating. You will then see the colorless topaz in the portion below the surface. You obviously cannot repolish or recut topaz gems that have been treated in this way. This color treatment is now being used to produce blue topaz too, and the shades can externally appear to be quite similar to those derived through the older radiation treatment.

An interesting thing occured during the time that this new topaz gem treatment was being publicized. The issue of health safety started being raised regarding radiation treated topaz. This despite the fact that no clear and proved cases, of people being harmed by handling or wearing topaz gems were brought forward. It did seem to be a strange coincidence that the new treatment topaz was being hotly marketed during the same time. In any case the uproar about radiated topaz got tamed into a whimper and was soon forgotten. Today, good quality blue topaz jewelry continues to utilize radiated topaz gems. The permanent color change and the total color transformation through the gem provided by this treatment remain unmatched.

Talking about hardness and durability, the details are impressive. Your topaz ring needs no special care, the gemstone has a hardness of 8 on the Mohs scale. It is however important to know that the design and construction of the ring, also influence it's durability and this is true of all gems including sapphires and diamonds. Insufficient metal weight also reflects negatively on how strong and sturdy your topaz gem stone ring would be. Another important thing to know is that topaz color treatments (other than radiation) often come with restrictions on the cleaning procedures. Ultrasonic cleaners are fine with topaz gem rings that use white or radiation produced blue topaz but, are surely not recommended for topaz colors derived by merely coating the surface. Blue topaz is generally accepted as the November birth stone.

If you would like to combine blue topaz with other gems here are some suggestions. Gem stone rings with blue topaz match well with pink gems or deep red gems like rubelite. Pale blue topaz can be combined with the darker london blue topaz or brighter swiss blue topaz gem too. Certain jewelry designs are created to look gorgeous by combining amethyst with blue topaz. It is obvious that a custom made topaz gem ring will give you greater flexibility to excercise your preferences.
