Blue Gemstone Rings, Ideas For Rings With Blue Stones

Mens London Blue Topaz Ring
Most people think of blue sapphires when they talk about blue gemstone rings. While sapphires are one of the blue gem options for gold or silver rings with blue stones, the truth is that many gorgeous gems have a blue color. Blue color is related to sky and waters, gems in shades of blue can have a color range from a pale blue to a very saturated dark blue. Somewhere in between are the bright blues, silent blues and even the vibrant neon blues. Not all blue gems are priced the same, each gem could have it's own properties with reference to hardness, durability and even color stability. Knowing the main blue gems when choosing a blue gem stone ring ensures that you make the right choice. It can also guide you to choose a blue color stone that is within your budget. In this section we get fairly deep into the world of blue gemstones, the language has however been kept simple and non-technical. The idea is to educate a buyer rather than to rush the buyer into making a purchase. You get the facts not a high pitched sales hype, if a blue stone is too delicate and not suitable for jewelry that would be worn often, we tell you just that.

Metal options: There is a general feeling that silver rings with blue gems should be made only with cheaper gemstones. Similarly the more expensive range of blue stones like blue sapphires, are thought to be suitable only for yellow or white gold blue gemstone rings. Technically there is no reason why a gold or 925 silver ring cannot be made with just about any blue stone. If you are planning on getting a sterling silver ring with blue gemstone, try to avoid rhodium, gold or any other plating on the silver ring. All platings on silver will wear off after a while, this can happen in patches and the ring could look quite untidy. If your choice is a gold ring with blue stone, you will have to make a selection between 14k or 18k blue stone rings. Since 14k gold is harder than 18k gold you could say that, 14k rings are stronger than 18k rings. The choice of a yellow or white gold gemstone ring can be based on your fancy, as there are no technical implications. Kaisilver provides options for gold and silver jewelry with gems of your choice, there is no limit to the degree of customization that you can request.

Gem prices: This is an important factor when you decide which blue gem to use for your ring. Typically blue gems could vary in price from 5 U.S$ per carat to over 1,000 U.S$ per carat. This price variation is sometimes observed even in gems of the same type, blue sapphires are a good example. A low grade blue sapphire with a dark color and no lustre could be bought at around 40 U.S$ per carat (retail), while a high end blue sapphire from Madagascar can cost you more than 500 U.S$ per carat. Move to good quality Sri Lankan blue sapphires and that price could march into the 1,000 U.S$ and above price range. These price issues become all the more critical when you need a blue gemstone ring but, are not particular about which blue gem that is.

Most gems are sold by weight unit which is the 'carat'. The interesting thing is that the price per carat of a gem can move up sharply as the size of the gem increases. If you could define the quality of a blue sapphire as Color-A, Lustre-A, Transparency-A you might get a 1 carat round gem of this quality for around 200 U.S$ per carat. Now retain this same quality standards and request for a 3 carat blue sapphire. You might expect the price to be approximately 3 carats x 200 U.S$ = 600 U.S$ for the piece. However in real life, the price per carat of the 3 carat blue sapphire would jump to around 500 U.S$ per carat as the gem size increases.

The important thing is that, not all blue gemstones exhibit the same behaviour in relation to size and price per carat. When it comes to blue topaz, the price variation per carat might not be noticeable in the 2 to 5 carat stone size range. You will however observe the price behaviour when you compare the price per carat of a 3 carat swiss blue topaz stone and 30 carat swiss blue topaz stone of the same quality.

Gem size: We now come to the discussion on the size of the gem in a blue gemstone ring. If you have read the above details on gem price behaviour (per carat) in relation to the size of the stone, you will realize that the gem size selection will be influenced by the type of blue color gem you use for your gemstone ring. If you have seen a stunning gemstone ring with a 8 carat lemon quartz stone, you surely cannot hope to replicate the same gemstone size with a blue sapphire ring. A medium grade blue sapphire in an 8 carat size will not be easy to find. Even if you do manage to come across such a large blue sapphire you will end up paying around 6,000 U.S$ to 10,000 U.S$ for just the gemstone. Remember that we are pricing a medium grade blue sapphire and not a good or high grade stone.

So if you feel it very important to have an 8 carat gem in your blue gemstone ring, then consider other options like blue topaz, blue lapis or probably blue aquamarine instead. We will discuss more details about these gems below. On the other hand, if you are very particular about getting a gold or silver blue stone ring with a blue sapphire, select a design that keeps the stone in the below 3 carat range. That size range should give you the best equation between price and size. This is very important advice so read this paragraph until you grasp and understand the contents.

Gem shape: You might come across fancy shaped gems in blue topaz or even aquamarine but, don't expect to find many of these when it comes to blue sapphire. Fancy shapes and cuts almost always involve a higher percentage of weight loss during the cutting process. The cost of the lost weight is added to the final weight of the cut stone, the buyer ends up paying for all that! The more expensive a gem, the less likely that it will be cut into any fancy shape. This is another factor that you will need to keep in mind when choosing a blue gem stone ring.

We will now discuss the main options for a blue gem stone, various aspects including durability, hardness, color stability, availability and price will be mentioned for each gem stone. This information is known to every jeweler but, they choose to keep it away from buyers. A rather selfish behaviour since a good business deal can happen only if, the buyer and seller benefit from the transaction.

Blue sapphire: You could refer to this as the king of blue gems, blue sapphire comes from the same mineral family as the famous red ruby.  Sapphire is the birthstone for the month of September. Almost 95% of the blue sapphires used in jewelry are heated to enhance their beauty. This is an accepted treatment that has been practised for many decades. By trade ethics any other treatment used on sapphires is supposed to be clearly disclosed to the buyer.

When it comes to durability, blue sapphire is a winner. Blessed with a hardness of 9, it comes second to only diamonds which rank a whole ten on the Mohs scale. So you need not wory about the gem in your blue gem ring being strong if it is a blue sapphire. Color stability is also impressive as long as the treatment used is only heat. Caring for your blue sapphire gemstone ring would be simple, it can be washed in a mild detergent solution. Your blue sapphire ring can also be cleaned using an ultrasonic cleaner. Blue sapphire gems are available in various grades, the price per carat is determined by the gem size, the origin and ofcourse the color and clarity of the stone.

Blue topaz: A great option for a blue gem stone ring, blue topaz is modestly priced and has good durability and color stability for it's price. This gem is available in three shades of blue, and almost every jewelry lover is bound to love at least one of these shades. The very pale blue topaz is referred to as sky blue topaz and can sometimes resemble the more expensive aquamarine. If you are interested in getting a blue gem stone ring, where the stone has an aquamarine color, sky blue topaz may be an affordable option for you. Moving to the brighter shade of blue topaz, you can choose a swiss blue topaz gem stone for your blue stone ring. A more saturated dark blue with not much brightness is the london blue topaz stone. Despite it's modest price, london blue topaz somehow appears more expensive than it's price would suggest. The price of blue topaz gems remains fairly modest even in sizes that are in the 5 to 7 carat range. If you are looking for a large blue gem stone ring, blue topaz would be a better and more affordable choice as compared to blue sapphire. Finding eye clean gems with no color zoning is not a very difficult task to accomplish.

Aquamarine: This variety of beryl is a lighter blue shade, the price of the stone depends on it's origin. In recent years, very pale blue aquamarine has been mined in China. Chinese aquamarine is much cheaper as compared to the slightly darker shade of aquamarine that comes from Brazil. As a general rule you can presume that, Brazilian aquamarine would cost around 3 to 4 times as much as Chinese aquamarine. This gem has good hardness and color stability, expect to pay much more than blue topaz if your blue gem stone ring needs this stone. An interesting thing that we mentioned earlier was that, pale blue (sky blue topaz) can sometimes resemble the color of aquamarine. So if you wish to have a gold or silver blue gemstone ring where the stone has an aquamarine color but, are not particular about it being an aquamarine stone, talk to your jeweler about the sky blue topaz option.

Blue Lapis: This is an opaque blue gem, the best quality lapis is mined in the mountains of Afghanistan. Many jewelry buyers looking for a blue lapis gemstone ring. request for a dark blue lapis with a uniform color and no specks or whitish patches. The fact is that in it's natural form, blue lapis has white portions composed of calcite and tiny golden specks made up of pyrite. When you insist on a dark blue stone with one uniform color throughout, what the jeweler actually gives you is a dyed blue lapis stone. This gem is not very hard and should not be soaked in water or detergents. It's main attraction is the good price even in large sizes.

Turquoise: Another blue gem stone that is often set in gold or silver gem stone rings. Turquoise gems in their natural form are quite prone to getting scratched or chipping. This is the reason why 'stabilized' turquoise with better durability is commonly used in jewelry. This is basically natural turquoise that has been treated to makes it stronger and enhances it's appearance too. Another type of turquoise that is often talked about is 'compressed' turquoise. Generally you should go for a stabilized turquoise or natural untreated turquoise for your gemstone ring. Imitation turquoise that could be made from plastic or other material are also quite common. Another interesting 'turquoise' is howlite (another stone) that is dyed to look like turquoise. It is really not expected that a casual gemstone ring buyer would be aware of all technical implications and details related to gems and jewelry. At the same time jewelers play trade gimmicks that fool even the frequent jewelry buyer. It is therefore important to choose a jeweler that you can trust.

Tanzanite: A very unique and interesting gemstone, tanzanite is a bluish-violet gemstone. It is possible for this gem to have a dominant blue hue with shades of violet or vice versa. All the commercially mined Tanzanite on our planet comes from one country, Tanzania. The gemstone is estimated to be rarer than a diamond and has remained popular for many years now. Despite being fairly expensive, durability issues would make it wise to avoid wearing the ring when doing heavy physical activity. Kaisilver procures Tanzanite gems directly from the miners in Tanzania, our skilled gem cutters handpick and custom cut each piece to be set in fine custom jewels.

Sodalite: Generally found as a blue gemstone, it is not very often that you will come across sodalite gem stone rings. People who wear these rings are not really after blue gems, it is rather the traditions and beliefs attached to sodalite that draw buyer to the stone. We talked about blue lapis gem stone rings, sodalite is sometimes mistaken for blue lapis. Since the gem stone is not very sturdy or hard, it might be a better idea to choose a sodalite gem stone pendant instead of a ring. Pendants generally experience lesser wear and tear as compared to gem stone rings.

Not recommended: We will now discuss a few blue stones, which we do not recommend for your blue stone ring. This might come as a surprise to you because, most jewelers do not provide such honest and straightforward information. Kyanite is a soft blue stone, it can sometimes resemble a gorgeous ceylon blue sapphire in color. This gem is mainly mined in Nepal and lacks hardness and durability. While Kaisilver can provide you with any gem on this planet, we do not recommend Kayanite for your blue stone ring. Blue apatite, is another stone with low durability, another gem that you should ideally stay away from. Blue flourite both in dyed and color enhanced form has recently flooded the markets, this comes from China. Once again lack of durability is it's drawback and we do not recommend that you use it for your blue stone ring.

We will now present a few Kaisilver rings with blue gemstones. Each of these rings can be custom made as gold or silver rings with the gemstone of your choice. For gold blue stone rings, options for 14k or 18k rings and yellow or white gold are always available.
