Ruby Rings, Ladies And Men's Ruby Gemstone Rings

Custom Ruby Ring
Red gems have always been in high demand, the color is related to feelings of love and passion. A ruby ring can be worn for a special occassion like a wedding or engagement, you can ofcourse wear a yellow or white gold ring as a casual wear jewel too. You do not have to be a gem or jewelry expert to know that your ruby gem stone ring would have a red gem, it is almost universally known that rubies are red and emeralds are green. The advancements made in gemological sciences are fairly recent. There was a time when every red stone was called a ruby! The British royal jewels include many items studded with expensive 'rubies'. It was later known that many of these rubies were infact red spinels! It probably did not matter much to the royals since most of these precious gems and jewels, were acquired by plundering the wealth of nations that they enslaved.

Rubies are mined in a few countries, stones mined in Burma have always been preferred for ruby gemstone rings. The supply of good Burmese rubies has been scant in recent years. One reason is the large scale mining that has increasingly depleted mines. The U.S has also requested jewelers to observe a ban on Burmese rubies, this relates to human rights issues in Burma at this time. You might also be able to get a ruby gemstone ring with a ruby mined in Thailand but, in recent years the quality of Thai rubies leaves much to be desired. Most of the material currently procured from Thai ruby mines is good only for cutting cabachon stones. The African country of Mozambique is also being touted as a source for rubies, we have observed some interesting cut rubies from Mozambique. Very low grade and opaque rubies can also be got from India. These are low quality almost opaque stones with a flaky dull appearance. Oils and coloring agents are often used to enhance Indian rubies, so do not expect to get any spectacular gems.

When buying a ruby ring, make sure that you know the origin of the gem stone in the ring. Heat treating rubies is a common practice and has been going on for many decades. It is almost 95% sure that the gemstone in your ruby ring is heat treated. This is done to enhance the clarity and overall beauty of the gemstone. Since conventional heat treatment of rubies does not alter the durability of the stone and is also permanent, gemstone experts have readily accepted this practice. Selecting the right jeweler is of utmost importance since, new ruby treatments have been devised to fool innocent gemstone ring buyers. It is not possible for a casual buyer to keep fully updated with these latest gimmicks and gem manufacturers take advantage of this.

You could choose a yellow or white gold ruby ring. The color red looks awesome in both gold colors and it would never allow the metal to overpower it's presence in your ring. This is an important issue since many gem stone rings look good in either yellow or white gold, few gems show their best in both gold colors. While a ruby gold ring is more common as compared to 925 silver ruby rings, you could get your ruby ring made in gold or sterling silver. A hardness of 9, second only to diamonds ensures that your ruby ring is strong and sturdy. Remember that design, metal weight and craftsmanship also influence the durability of a jewel. The color stability of rubies is well known and you need not worry about the gem stone fading in light or household heat conditions. It is perhaps the 'precious' gemstone label attached to rubies that, makes it attractive to men and ladies. If you think of combining rubies with other gems, blue sapphires, yellow sapphires and even iolite gems are some good ideas.

The treatment of rubies needs to be clearly addressed since this is a very important issue. When we talk of treated rubies, we refer to natural rubies that have been treated to enhance their color or clarity. This discussion will not include factory made substitutes no matter what fancy name they go by. As of now, there are 3 main types of treatments that have come to our notice. We explain them in simple non technical language, while other gem experts might get very passionate and scientific when explaining the treatment processes, we have geared our report to be simple, understandable and useful to even a casual jewelry buyer.

Conventional Heat Treatment: You can take it for granted that the ruby in your gem stone ring is heat treated. In this process, rough ruby is heated to high temperatures in a special oven. The heat allows the release of any gases present in the gem. External particles that got trapped in the gemstone during the centuries that it took the stone to form, might also (in some cases) melt or disintegrate. The heat process adds color and clarity to the gem stone. The important thing is that the physical properties of the ruby in terms of hardness and durability remain intact when the conventional heat treatment is applied to rubies. The color enhancement that is done to the stone is permanent and will not fade or change in any way. Gemstone experts have always accepted this treatment process.

Flux Treatment: If your ruby ring has a gem that is treated with this process, it is the duty of your jeweler to inform you about the same. In this case the application of heat in the oven to the rough rubies includes the addition of certain chemicals. Borax is a common chemical used in the flux treatment of rubies. Like most natural gems, rubies will have fissures and cracks within them. These reduce the clarity of the gem and also it's lustre. The flux agent (often Borax based) works to reduce the melting point of the ruby that is heated in the oven. The molten ruby flows into the cracks and fissures within the gem. This helps close the cracks in the gem and softens their visibility. You will therefore get better and clearer rubies in this process. The value and therefore the price of such flux treated rubies is lower than that of conventionally heat treated rubies. It might not be easy to differentiate between flux heated and conventionally heated rubies by casual observations. A gem laboratory can do a clearer scrutiny and often find, traces of flux in the portions of the stone that are filled with the molten ruby. The durability of the ruby remains unaffected and the enhanced clarity and lustre that is derived is permanent. Remember that if your ruby gemstone ring uses a flux treated ruby, the price of the ring should be lower than a similar ring made with a conventionally heated ruby gem stone.

Fissure Filled or Glass Filled: You should ideally stay away from these rubies, this paragraph will tell you why. Unfortunately big jewelry houses have given fancy names to these ruby junk stones and elevated their status, just to be able to charge higher prices. In this process the lowest grade rubies are used, this rough ruby has 90% inclusions and fissures. The stones are washed in strong acid solutions to make them very brittle and porous. The physical properties of the ruby including hardness, are permanently changed. You can take one of these acid washed stones  and crush them with your bare hands on a table! In the next step, the washed rough ruby is heated in an oven along with silica (glass) based chemicals. The glass melts and flows through the pores and cracks on the rough ruby. The final piece shows enhanced transparency and is a combination of ruby and glass. Technically we would say that, the stone is a composite stone consisting of glass and ruby. If your ruby gem stone ring has one such stone, you need to be very careful. Even a simple wash in an ultrasonic cleaner can ruin the stone. Such a gem has very low value and you can get a large 5 carat glass filled ruby for under 50 U.S$.

Kaisilver ruby rings are fully custom made. By procuring rough ruby directly from the mining site we ensure that no other treatment (besides conventional heat treatment) is used to treat the rubies. Since each ruby ring is custom made, options for 14k and 18k gemstone rings are always available. While we have access to all three types of treated rubies, we would strongly suggest that you do not choose fissure or glass filled rubies. If you are working with a very tight budget for your yellow or white gold ruby ring, choosing a lab created (artificial) ruby is better than going for a fragile glass filled ruby. By offering complete customization for gemstone rings and all other jewels, we allow you to choose the metal, design, dimensions and gem stone for your custom jewels. Do contact our support team at sales@kaisilver.com with any questions or requirements that you might have.
